Leicester High School for Girls – 7 Bay Music Rooms and Caretakers’ Accommodation
Leicester High School for Girls first approached MPB Ltd in Autumn 2017 requesting a site visit to discuss the removal of an old temporary classroom and to be replaced by new music rooms and caretakers’ accommodation. The building was installed during the summer of 2019 over a period of three weeks.
A new unique 7-bay, L-shaped, single storey modular building was designed to include the desired two music teaching classrooms, four practice rooms, caretaker accommodation (office, workshop and store) and a single unisex toilet. Careful planning was considered regarding noise pollution due to nearby residential properties as well as other school buildings. Walls were manufactured specifically to reduce noise escaping. The windows closest to the residential area were non openable and contained obscured glass to provide privacy. All windows were dark grey aluminium, double glazed and fitted with weather and acoustic seals. The internal doors installed were acoustic rated doors with specially glazed vision panels.
External walls were made from plastisol steel and covered in a combination of brick-slip and composite wood-effect cladding to create a bespoke finish.
The foundations for this project were a combination of poured concrete and a system called ‘Jackpads, which provides a secure base for the building to sit upon. As the quality of the ground (where the modular classroom was to be sited) needed improvement, poured concrete was used.
This modular classroom building consisted of:
New 7-bay L-shaped building.
4 music practice rooms.
Plastisol Steel with brick slip and composite wood effect exterior.
Dark grey aluminium double glazed windows with weather and acoustic seals.
Kirncroft steel exterior doors.
Air con and panel heaters.
Carpet and vinyl flooring.
Automatic LED lights.
Hot water heaters.
